Atlanta GA Stinging Insect Pest Control

A stinging insect is a term utilized in reference to species with stinging capabilities. The hornet, ant, fly, wasp, and bee are stinging insects that mostly belong to the Hymenoptera order. Many stinging insect species play an important role in commercial, industrial, and home gardening. These pollinators manually transfer pollen from male plants to female plants. Without pollinators, there would be no cucumbers, apples, almonds, squash, okra, kiwifruit, onions, or potatoes. There would also be no marigolds, salvia, Calendula Officinalis, black-eyed Susan, bee balms, borage, or butterfly bushes.

The most commonly reported stinging insect sightings in Georgia involve the yellowjacket, honeybee, carpenter bee, paper wasp, and bald-faced hornet. Learn more about these insects by reading the content provided in the article below.

Stinging Insect – Northern And European Paper Wasps

The paper wasp, a Vesipidae family member, is a moderately aggressive stinging insect. The insect’s aggression is at its highest when predators are in their personal space. The nest is constructed from wood fiber, with a grayish, honeycomb design. Paper wasp hangs their nests from eaves, deck railing, overhangs, and abandoned buildings.

The body is dark brown with yellow stripes. The insect’s legs are orangish/yellow, with brown wings and black antennas. Paper wasp have great flying capabilities, reaching distances up to 25 feet.

Stinging Insect – Yellowjacket

Yellowjackets are some of the most dangerous stinging insects. The insects are highly aggressive, which intensifies significantly as the colony expands. Like the paper wasp, the yellowjacket extracts fiber from wood. The wood fiber is spun into a round nest with a smooth texture. Nests can be found in shrubs, underground, attics, and piles of lumber.

The body is black with yellow stripes, the wings are nearly translucent, the legs are yellow, and the antennas are solid black. The insect’s flying capabilities are extraordinary, reaching distances up to 1,000 feet. To protect its young from predatory animals – raccoon, skunk, bear, and badger – the yellowjacket colony does not stir too far away from the nest.

Only the queen survives the winter.

Stinging Insect – Bald-Faced Hornet

The bald-faced hornet is another highly aggressive stinging insect. As the colony expands in size, the aggression level grows as well. The nest has a teardrop shape and can be found in bushes, holes in the side of buildings, and overhangs. The body and head are black with white markings and the legs and antennas are black.

Bald-face hornets are highly aggressive stinging insects. Witnesses have reported hornet nests the size of a basketball or soccer ball.

Stinging Insect – Honeybee

Honeybees aren’t as aggressive as other stinging insects. Some people have bred them to ensure that they do not sting at all. In addition to this, a lot of people raise honeybees so they can collect their honey. These stinging insects build extensive nests made of wax. Their nests can be located on rocks, hollow trees, and walls. Honeybees are one of the only stinging pests that can use their nest for multiple years. As a result, they have to collect and store honey to survive during the cold winter months.

These pests are orange or yellow and have fuzzy bodies.

Stinging Insect – Carpenter Bee

Carpenter bees are one of the least aggressive stinging insects. You can approach their nest and likely not get attacked. They do not build normal nests. Instead, they bore holes in items made of wood. For instance, they’ll drill 3/8” holes in the wood fascia, decks, and siding. The hole is ultimately used to care for the carpenter bee’s young. These bees look a lot like bumblebees. Remember that males are the only ones that have yellow spots on their faces.

Stinging Insect Dangers

Most people are afraid of stinging insects because they sting and attack humans. However, you shouldn’t worry about it so much. Male stinging insects do not sting. In addition to this, you’ll find that some species are not aggressive at all. With that being said, it is wise to stay away from their nests. If you don’t, you’ll likely get stung. Be cautious and do what you can to protect yourself from potential problems. Some stinging insects can sting multiple times so they are dangerous. Plus, they can cause the victim to experience an anaphylactic shock.
